Youth Music Programme

Shetland Arts' Youth Music Programme, entitled 'Solid Rock' largely concentrates primarily on rock music orientated and musicians, although encouragement is given toward the inclusion of other genres and styles i.e. jazz and traditional music, into this more 'mainstream' approach.

The emphasis of the programme is geared toward:

  • Group construction and formation
  • Improving the individuals' knowledge and skills, both independently and in a group context
  • Effective use of instruments, samples and effects
  • Inter-band communication
  • Stage presence
  • Sound and lighting techniques
  • Recording mixing and demo production
  • Music business issues

These elements will be addressed through the following programme:

  • 5 x Regional creative music workshops throughout Shetland
  • 2 x Weekend residential recording workshops
  • A one-day effective use of samples workshop
  • A music business seminar
  • Guitar and vocal workshops

In addition to the rock music orientated workshops Shetland Arts Trust will also promote a 'once-a-month' traditional music session for 12 - 18 year olds. This is aimed at giving those receiving 'formal' traditional music training in schools an 'informal' and fun outlet for these skills.

These sessions will be promoted in the lounge bar of 'Da Lounge' in Lerwick (the home of traditional music in Shetland. The evening will, of course, be totally alcohol free.

Additionally, Shetland Arts Trust operate a fully inclusive policy for all their music development initiatives, so young people of all ages can participate in the full programme.

Shetland Arts Trust will deliver this part of its music development programme in partnership with Shetland Islands Council Community Services Division
