In order to promote Shetland music in a local, national and international context it has been necessary for Shetland Arts, in partnership with other related organisations in this particular field such as Shetland Islands Council and VisitShetland, to create initiatives that not only promote the music and the musicians of the islands, but in turn the islands themselves as a potential visitor destination, particularly in cultural terms.

From 2005 this is also being done in conjunction with, and as an integral part of, the local Cultural Strategy and the Shetland 'brand'.

Direct Initiatives

  • Website renewal and updates
  • Music leaflet creating and distribution
  • Trade Fair attendance (Folk Alliance, Womex and Showcase Scotland / Celtic Connections and Go North etc) and other promotional and networking opportunities.
  • Shetland music showcases in and outside Shetland
  • Demo CD production and distribution
  • Media related events
  • Music as part of the Shetland 'brand'

Indirect Initiatives

  • Local cultural strategy
  • Tourism events
  • Corporate events
  • Exchange visits
  • Promotion of Shetland acts at national and international events
  • Educational initiatives
  • Youth music initiatives
