Shetland Youth Jazz

The jazz equivalent of our school fiddle bands, SYJ are a formidable jazz 'big band' who again draw their members from schools the length and breadth of Shetland.

The group is 'guided' by a number of local instrumental instructors, the more prominent of which being Roy Hughson and Jane Morton - both brass teachers in a number of Shetland schools.

SYJ's set features a wide range of jazz standards, including more challenging pieces by the likes of Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.

The group have worked on a regular basis with the internationally acclaimed Bancroft brothers and have toured outwith Shetland, including an appearance on stage at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen as part of their famous weekend afternoons jazz promotions.
