Literally the 'new kid on the block' and the most recent addition to this our current Shetland 'Hall of Fame'. Jillian first came to prominence fronting her school band in 2001 at the tender age of only 13. She soon found herself performing in a solo capacity, while her unique and breath-taking arrangement of John Lennon's classic 'Imagine', recorded on the Shetland Arts Trust compilation album 'Tracks North', attracted national air-play on a number of Radio Scotland programmes following its release in 2004. Jillian entered Celtic Connections Open Stage competition in 2005, along with around 200 other talented hopefuls from around the world, going on to be selected as one of only 6 winners to be awarded a coveted 'Danny Award' for her mature performance on that stage. That success ensured she would play a more prominent role at the 2006 Celtic Connections festival, where she supported such bands as Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, while performing at a number of festival events in her own right, perhaps the highlight being the opportunity to appear with the legendary Eddi Reader as part of the festivals 'Master & Apprentice' series. Jillian performs a mixture of well-chosen cover-versions and original compositions, many of which are written by Marie Williamson, a talented local singer / songwriter from the island of Whalsay. She has just released her first EP 'My Smaa Temple Me' on the Shetland Arts Trust SAT label, and this has again attracted national radio play-listing and the attention of the wider record industry. Her debut album is expected to be released later this year. A star on the rise and one to watch for sure. |
