Gemma Donald

An exciting young fiddle talent in true Shetland tradition. Gemma was the youngest winner of the prestigious Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year when just 13 years old in 2002.

In 2004 Gemma won the Junior Section of the Banchory Scottish Fiddle Championships, along with the 'March, Strathspey and Reel' section at the same competition where she achieved the highest marks awarded since the competition began in 1959.

In 2005 (and again in 2006) she won the open section at the Musselburgh Fiddle Championships, also winning the competitions senior 'march, strathspey and reel' sections.

Also in 2005 she won the senior section of the March,Strathespey and Reel competition at Banchory - a title which automatically afforded her a place in the Banchory Fiddle Chapionships in 2006 - an event she ultimately went on to win.

In early 2006 Gemma participated in a major two week tour of the USA as part of the young Shetland 'super-group' Gaddery and is already a seasoned veteran of a number of national and international live appearances, including an acclaimed appearance at Celtic Connections in 2006.

She plays comfortably and adeptly in many styles, recently joining one of Shetland's top country bands 'May & Mackie' - an entirely new string to her bow if you'll pardon the pun.

But perhaps her major achievement to date was winning the 'Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship' in October 2006, the first person to win the event on their first appearance there (since the first year of competition of course) The Glenfiddich Championship is viewed by many to be the most demanding and most prestegious event of its kind in Scotland.

Surely another local name to be up there with other fiddle greats in the very near future indeed.
