It's all well and good having a culture and heritage with an identity and a history that we can be proud of, but unless that is a living, breathing, vibrant identity then it means very little.

Shetland is recognised as having more talented musicians per square mile than just about any other community you can name. Most of these will be featured somewhere throughout this site.

But just to give you a flavour of what we mean, this page takes a focused look at just some of the artists that are currently fanning our cultural flames and keeping the name Shetland prominent on stages throughout the world. These are the musicians who have gained reputations well beyond our shores, through live performance, media coverage and recorded output. All current names, they follow in the footsteps of illustrious names from the past such as Dr Tom Anderson, Willie Hunter, Ronnie Cooper, Ian Burns and Frank Jamieson, to name but a few.

Take a look. We are sure you will find many of them already familiar and perhaps you might be amazed that so many top quality names emanate from such a small, reasonably isolated group of islands. It could be argued that there should be still more current names on the list.....rest assured there will be very soon
