Frank Jamieson (1920-1982)

Frank was born at Sandyburn in Vidlin, and learnt to play several instruments before concentrating on the fiddle.

From the early 1950s he and Ronald Cooper became close musical associates, playing fiddle and accordion respectively in their Sapphires dance band and elsewhere. They would regularly meet for a tune on a weeknight, in the Queen's Hotel bar to begin with, then they moved to the Lounge Bar after its proprietor installed a piano, thus initiating the bar's now-legendary reputation as a musical venue.

When the Shetland Fiddlers' Society was formed in 1960 Frank was a founder-member, and its treasurer for many years.

Frank Jamieson composed many tunes for the fiddle, music to suit the dances of the time, along with notable slow airs, all with a distinctive Shetland sound. These were published by his son Ronnie in two volumes, still in print.

Best-known of his tunes are probably the Sandyburn Reel, the two-step Ronald Cooper and the air Margaret Ann Robertson.
