Vicky Gray

Vicky Gray was born in Shetland and brought up on Shetland fiddle music. Her Grandfather Gibby Gray was a well-known fiddler, best known for his unique style of playing and a lilt that kept people dancing. She was taught locally including lessons from Willie Hunter who, as well as being an incredible fiddler, had lots of great stories to share.

Whilst at primary school, Vicky started playing with the Westside Fiddle and Accordion Club, a great chance to play alongside some inspirational fiddlers such as Michael Ferrie and the Deyell brothers.

Later she joined Shetlands Young Heritage, the fiddle group originally brought together by the late Dr Tom Anderson. This brought her lots more opportunities, most notably working alongside the Calgary Fiddlers in Canada, touring Alberta and the Rockies, and a month long tour of New Zealand.

On leaving school, Vicky moved to Edinburgh and completed a 2:1 Honours degree in Marketing and Economics, but soon decided to concentrate on music. She became involved in a number of musical projects, gaining a very positive reputation as an extremely eclectic musician and singer.

Exploring world music, she took a course in Klezmer fiddle at London University and made a number of high profile appearances as part of a Brazilian Samba Band including two at the Glastonbury Festival.

In 2005 Vicky was invited to play for the Queen during the official opening of the new Perth Concert Hall and last year undertook a two-week tour of the USA as part of Shetland's young supergroup 'Gaddery'.

Vicky has been very inspired through her involvement in Shetlands evolving singer-songwriter scene, providing backing vocals and fiddle for Jordan Ogg and Jack Sandison. Last year she and Jack did a support slot for Ocean Colour Scene and she regularly performs with Jordan on Edinburgh's acoustic music scene.

Vicky is now resident in Edinburgh working full time as a musician. She has recently been performing with Aberfeldy, a critically acclaimed indie/folk band who are currently hard at work crafting the bands 3rd album, and Amplifico who currently look set to take over the indie/pop world with the launch of their eagerly anticipated debut album in January 2008.
