Like many of Shetland's recent crop of fine young musicians, Mark started playing the fiddle at the age of 8, initially receiving lessons from Shetland fiddle legend Willie Hunter then, following Willie's death, from Margaret Scollay and Eunice Groat, while another major inspiration was local musician David Keith. Again like many of Shetland's young musicians he can play a number of instruments including guitar and mandolin. At the age of 15 Mark won the title of Shetland's Young Fiddler of the Year and in 2003 was a finalist in the prestigeous competition 'Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year', held in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall during the city's annual Celtic Connections Festival. Mark has made a number of national and international live appearances, including Celtic Connections and other festivals throughout Scotland and Europe and is currently a member of Shetland band's 'Drop the Box' and 'Fullsceilidh Spelemannslag' - a large trad music 'supergroup' with an ever changing and evolving line up who have a "fired up and powerful sound". Yet another name to look our for in the future... |
