Filska

Another fine fiddle fronted band from Shetland comprising Jenna Reid (fiddle, vocals, accordion) Gemma Wilson (fiddle, vocals) Bethany Reid (keyboards, fiddle, vocals) and Andrew Tulloch (guitar and vocals)

FilskaFilska

In Shetland dialect 'Filska' means high spirited and mischievous, an apt musical and perhaps even personal description.

The three girl members of the group all hail form the same village in Shetland, Quarff, and have been playing traditional music together for many years, having been taught by legendary Shetland figures such as Dr Tom Anderson and Willie Hunter among others, which no doubt went some way to ensuring that all three girls achieved prominent success in Shetland's Young Fiddler of the Year competition.

They released their first album 'Harvest Home' in 1995, followed by 'Time and Tide' in 1998 which was a major step forward for them. The album was recorded by local engineer Andrew Tulloch who also played guitar on it, joining the band as a full time member shortly afterwards.

Filska have toured extensively abroad, including numerous festival and concert appearances in Europe, USA and Canada.

In 2000 they appeared on BBC Scotland's Millennium Hogmany show, live from Shetland, to over 60 countries worldwide and were finalists in prestigious national competition the Radio 2 Young Folk Awards

As can be seen from the above line-up Filska are more than just another fiddle band, now including harmony singing and a variety of instruments in their exciting but still wonderfully down-to-earth live show.

Natural entertainers if ever there were ones.
