Holyrood Nights

Shetland band Fiddlers' Bid were the musical ' content' in a Shetland promotional evening held in the Scottish Parliament building in Holyrood, Edinburgh on Tuesday 13th March

The band were just one part of a much wider promotional initiative aimed at raising the profile of the islands in a cultural and economic context, with many of the invited guests being drawn from the UK and international business sector.

Other elements that went to make up a very successful initiative and evening were Shetland food (seafood, shellfish, lamb etc) Shetland beer as brewed by the Valhalla Brewery on the most northerly island of Unst, DVD footage of the islands and, perhaps inevitably, members of the 2007 Up-Helly-Aa Guizer Jarl Squad (30 fully armed Vikings) - who stole the show on the night itself.

Fiddlers Bid played a number of energetic sets featuring their own special brand of Shetland music, before teaming up with the jarl squad musicians to round the evening off with a Shetland dance.

As one MSP put it "The Parliament building has never seen anything quite like this, and you would certainly not get this happening at Westminster".
