Album Review - Cullivoe Fiddlers

Many people speak of the strenght of the Shetland fiddle tradition, but how many know that there are many individual and very different strands to this tradition?

In years past Shetland had many many different styles that went to make up the overall tradition. Almost every village, let alone area could almost be singularly identified by its style of fiddling.

Although this is probably less distinctive today there are still some areas of Shetland where individualism rules - none more so than in Cullivoe - a small village tucked away at the north end of the northern island of Yell.

Here things are still done in the old way and, it has to be said, probably all the better for it. The Culliove Fiddlers have now become lauded for keeping such traditions alive, so much so that they are now in demand much further afield than Shetland, having recently performed in England and Sweden and with trips to Canada and Russia no less due in 2007.
