Vunk Fest 2010 - get Vunky this weekend

The second Vunk Fest, Shetland's alternative music and art festival fires off this weekend with a packed line-up of local and visiting bands and artists.

Vunk Fest is a not for profit festival taking place over the weekend of the 9th of July consisting of 4 main events designed to allow people to interact with music and art, as well as providing opportunities to hear bands that have never before played in Shetland whilst supporting and highlighting the talents of some of our own local musicians and artists.

Events:

Music Concert at the Voe Hall on the 9th July A dry bar event for over 14’s, a music concert with bands both local and incoming; featuring some of Shetland’s most aspiring youth rock musicians as well as the seasoned musicians. The concert begins at 6.30pm and closes at 1am. Headlining this night are The Dangerfields from Northern Ireland along with Chugg, Xylophone Race, Bacchus, Hidden Agenda, Semperfi, Sick Twisted Fate and Pets In Jars. Tickets cost £10 each.

Music Concert at the Norscot Angling Club on the 10th July For the Over 18’s with bands from Holland, England, Scotland, Orkney and Shetland This event is age 18+, taking place at the Norscot Angling Club, Gremista, Lerwick; the concert begins at 6:30pm and closes at 1am and headlining this night will be A Thousand Lies from Newcastle with Ten Tonne Dozer, Deafening, Monstertone, Bitumen River, The Brothel Corpse Trio, Poison Popcorn, Dirty Ride and the great Inverness band Stolen Order in their last ever performance together. Tickets cost £10 each. Music & Film Inspired Art Exhibition on the 9th, 10th and 11th July This event is an exhibition of art works from Shetland, Orkney and Australian contributors presenting their views of music and musicians in a range of styles with an artist remit of ‘Ego and Persona’. The exhibition will also feature a selection of images captured of the bands playing over the weekend. Musician and Artist interactive events will be exhibited in film, photographs and painting. The winners of the Vunk Fest Under 18 art competition will also be on display during the exhibition. The three day exhibition of visual arts takes place at the Shetland Museum in the Learning room and Foyer Gallery. Friday 9th July from 10am to 5pm, Saturday 10th July 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11th July Noon to 5pm, everyone is welcome, there is no admission charge. On Sunday 11th The film showcase will take place from 1pm to 5pm in the Shetland Museum auditorium there will also be music performances accompanying films on show and people will have the opportunity to meet members of the bands in an informal environment. Vunk Fest also has a display of artwork from 2009’s festival exhibition which will be exhibited at the Isleburgh Community Centre, upper foyer from the 25th June through to the 11th July 2010.

Vunk Fest has been part funded by the Shetland Arts Fund, which supports not for profit voluntary organisations and individuals to develop their art form and/or to deliver arts related projects and events that meet local community needs and make a lasting difference in the community. The scheme can support all forms of arts genres including the visual arts, crafts, dance, drama, dialect, film, literature, music, theatre and combined arts. This grant aid scheme is funded by Shetland Charitable Trust and managed in partnership with the Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Arts Development Agency.
