Trad Sessions news & Cullivoe review

Shetland Arts Traditional Session in Cullivoe Hall last Friday (16th May) brought together some of the youngest musicians from the Northern Isles with several more experienced players from the community.

Around 30 people of all ages gathered to enjoy the tunes. Highlights included The Cullivoe fiddlers and Lel Robertson who brought their distinctive style and experience to the evening, and some great sets led by Lana Thomson, an up and coming star on the accordion.

Mark Lawson, head teacher of Mid Yell school, said of the young players "Just watching them sit alongside the Cullivoe Fiddlers and other local adults, and joining in the odd tune was a great experience for them."

The sessions are designed to encourage participation whilst ensuring that the session is targeted at the young players, with the seasoned musicians encouraging them along; it's something for the young players to aspire to.

This is the first of new sessions being organised by Shetland Arts across the Isles to encourage young players and communities to "fire up a tune" and to preserve each areas own distinctive styles. But it's not all about the players. Everybody is welcome, especially folk with children who are interested in taking up an instrument.

The Rankin Lounge in Aith will host the next session on Friday 23rd, followed by Isbister Hall, Whalsay on Friday 30th and Delting Boating Club on 6th June; all from 7.30 until 11pm.
