Two of Shetland's finest musicians, Steven Spence and Gary Peterson, will be appearing on the "Ceol Special" TV programme to be broadcast on ITV1 at 11.40pm on Monday 22nd Dec 2008. Inverness based journalist and musician Erik Spence, upon finding out he had musical relatives in Shetland, decided get the family together for a session and record it for TV. He approached TV producer Bob Kenyon who agreed to support the project and the group "Colvadale", named after Erik's grandparents' home on Unst, was born. Colvadale consists of Steven Spence on fiddle, Steven's first cousin Gary Peterson on mandolin, Erik Spence on accordion and keyboards, Erik's daughter Iona on acoustic guitar and flute, and family friend Jacqui MacDonald on keyboards. Steven and Erik had never met before the idea was tabled. Erik's first visit to Unst for a tune with Steven was a success, and Erik soon made a return visit for another session, this time at Gary's house. Colvadale will be performing a mixture of traditional tunes original compositions by Steven and Erik on the TV special including "John Spence of Uyeasound" a tribute to Erik's uncle from Unst, and 'George's Reel', a tune Steven wrote for his son.
