Soprano singer with local connections’ Shetland premiere

Shetland Arts is proud to offer a rare opportunity to hear a recital by two world-class musicians: Ukrainian soprano singer Oksana Mavodii and Bulgarian pianist Silviya Michaylova.

The duo will perform at the Lerwick Town Hall on Thursday 12th February and Busta House Hotel, near Brae, on Friday 13th February.

The varied programme, which includes opera recitals and jazz classics, will feature works by Pucinni, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, Verdi, Chopin and Mozart.

Oksana Mavodii, who is married to a Shetlander, graduated from the State Academy of Music, in Sofia, in 2001. She is a laureate and the winner of various Bulgarian national and academic competitions. Between 2004 and 2006 she continued her education in Germany at Musik Hochschule in Karlsruhe with Professor Marga Schiml. In 2008 she graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy with a postgraduate diploma in Opera Studies. As well as this distinguished academic career, Mavodil has participated in many concerts, including the premier performances of cycles by the Bulgarian composer Artin Poturljan and Lukserburger composer J.Heinen. She also sang the part of Beliza (soprano variant) in opera Il ReTeodoro in Venezia by Paesello-Hense( Germany,Karlsruhe).

Pianist Silviya Michaylova, who began playing piano at age 7, was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. At the age of ten she won third prize in the 'Dream in Seasons' competition in her home town and soon after that she commenced lessons with Mrs. Rositza Ivancheva - one of the most renowned piano teachers in Bulgaria. A year later she was accepted to the National School for Music and Dance Art, "Dobrin Petkov" in Plovdiv, Bulgaria (NSMDA). In 2002 she won a prize for the performance of 'Prelude' from Vesselin Stoyanov in the national competition in the name of Vesselin Stoyanov in Sofia.

In 2007 she graduated from NSMDA with honours, taking both the Secondary Education Diploma and the Certificate of Professional Qualification with distinction. She also recieved the Special award from the NSMDA for serving many good causes and the "Penka Popova" Special prize for high achievements in academic subjects. Silviya has also won a Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Trust Entrance Scholarship and is now a student there in Professor Fali Pavri's piano class.

Silviya has attended master classes by a number of famous pianists including Mikhail Rudy, Joseph Seiger, Tamara Poddubnaya, Stela Dimitrova-Maystorova, Atanas Kurtev, and Milena Mollova. She also has increasing experience of performance and has given a variety of chamber music recitals since 2005 and has played for the BBC Radio 3 Pianothon Finale with Tom Poster.

Shetland Music Development Officer, Bryan Peterson, said 'This is a great oppertunity for people to come along and enjoy these concerts fom two very talented musicians, with a programme featuring a range of music from jazz standards to operatic arias.'
