The Scottish Chamber Orchestra have just completed a hugely successful visit to Shetland, delivering a number of workshops and three concerts as part of the visit. The rare visit of an orchestra to Shetland was an exciting event for local music lovers, with the full orchestra drawing over 500 people to Lerwick's Clickimin Centre on Saturday 16th June for a programme that included music by Beethoven and Britten. Further individual concerts featuring the string and brass sections of the orchestra were held in the same venue on the Friday and Sunday nights, with both events again drawing healthy audiences. In addition to the public concerts, members of the orchestra also delivered a number of workshops in schools throughout Shetland, including live performances in the schools themselves, as part of the SCO's educational and outreach programme. The event was funded by the Scottish Arts Council as part of the Highland Year of Culture 2007 with the local management of the events being undertaken by Shetland Arts. Director of Shetland Arts Gwilym Gibbons said that the visit had been a huge success and that he hoped this would only be the start of a long and hopefully more regular association between the islands and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. |
