Shetland's 'Cullivoe Dance Band' have scooped the award as 'Best Scottish Dance Band of the Year 2007' at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards held in Fort William in early December.
The band were selected from a short list of four nominees, all well established bands on the national Scottish dance band scene. Ivor Scollay who plays lead accordion with the Cullivoe Dance Band said "We are amazed and over the moon with this award. It came as a great surprise to us, but it's a real honour that's for sure and a great boost for the band in general, especially as we were up against three other great bands". Other Shetland nominees on the night included fiddler Chris Stout in the 'Best Album category for 'Devil's Advocate'; Fiddlers' Bid in the 'Best Folk Band' category and fiddler Jenna Reid in the 'Instrumentalist of the Year' section - a section which was ultimately won by Catriona McKay who, although from Dundee, has strong Shetland connections due to the fact she plays for Fiddlers Bid, the Chris Stout Quintet and as part of a duo with Chris Sout.
