The BBC have just announced the lauch of a prestigeous classical music competition which will be aired on BBC2 and which also carries a first prize of a recording contract with a prominent classical music record label.

"We are launching a major Classical Music Competition to be aired on BBC2, the prize will be a recording contract with a top classical music label. We feel that this is a music competition with a difference as it seeks to not only discover new talent but also develop and nurture their musicianship combining a competition with a specialist music school. This competition will appear as a five part prime time series aiming to engage new and existing audiences with classical music.

The competition will be open to musicians aged up to 19 years who have reached grade 8 standard. The provisional structure will involve 2 audition stages in May and July where nine extremely talented musicians will be selected to attend a specialist residential music academy for three weeks during August 2007. The director of the Academy Matthew Barley will oversee their musical development and musical programme. The students will receive specialist instrumental tuition, master-classes, performance practice and guidance from well known classical professionals. At the end of the course three finalists will be invited to perform in a grand televised final at a prestigious concert venue in October.
