The Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival is of Shetland's premier music festivals. It takes place mid-October and pretty much does what it says on the tin, largely concentrating on traditional music and dance. Indeed if dancing, rather than simply listening, is your 'thing', this one's for you. The music of Scotland, Ireland and, of course, Shetland is very much to the fore, but expect liberal doses of Scandinavian and even American music to be featured as well. In fact if it can be played on the accordion and fiddle (not to mention just about everything else bar, perhaps, the kitchen sink) then really, anything goes. Again a heady mixture of visiting and local acts combine to make a heady traditional brew. The festival runs from Thursday to Sunday inclusive and is rounded off with a 'grand dance' in the local sports complex for over 1000 enthusiasts. But this is no ordinary dance, with almost every band booked to take part in the festival (and often a few more besides) taking to the stage at some point during the evening to do things 'their way'. Sweat drenched... you bet!!!! Before that though the festival goes out and about, visiting all Shetland's regions, including the further flung islands, where concerts, dances and sessions galore go on... well, lets be honest, often all night. 'Breakfast with 'Red Bull' anyone? Visit the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival website for details.
