Shetland traditional music has often been termed 'unique', and its clear from the increasing worldwide interest and demand that many people share that view. But if this is indeed the case, what makes it so? And is it all just wall-to-wall traditional music in the islands?

One thing is for sure: Shetland music has a lot of history behind it.

Sure, you will detect elements of Scottish, Scandinavian and perhaps Irish influences, but there's something else there that underpins those areas of familiarity, something different, something unique, something... well simply something Shetland. Fiddle Frenzy, Shetland Arts' fiddle school and festival, will run from the 4th to the 10th of August this year. The weeklong event combines fiddle tutoring and concerts with tours of Shetland and cultural experiences.
Young Shetland jazz stars of the future present a short concert at 7.15pm at the Town Hall on Sunday 27th April.
The 27th Young Fiddler of the Year winners were announced at the Garrison Theatre on Saturday 19th of April after 2 days of competition.
